I go to school in this district. Not awful, but I do have one complaint about the starting times of the schools. Elementary schools start at 8:00, middle schools start at 8:30, and high schools start at 7:30. It has been proven time and time again that teenagers naturally go to bed later and therefore wake up later, and statistically students who attend high schools with a later starting time do better academically. Another problem with this scheduling is that it’s inconvenient for the parents as well. A lot of parents have to go into work earlier than 8:00-8:30 and have to either scramble to find a ride for their child before the school year starts, or hope that their 5-14 year old child can make it safely to the nearest bus stop (which isn’t always guaranteed, as Kenosha has one of the highest human trafficking rates in the state). If elementary schools started earlier, this wouldn’t be as much of a concern for those who have to go to work early. Furthermore, if high schools were to start later, not only would there be a academic and mental health improvement, it would also have little to no effect on their parent’s work schedule, as many high schoolers are able to drive themselves to school. If they were unable to do so for any reason, most would be able to get a ride from one of their fellow classmates, or at least be safer and more responsible when walking to a bus stop than a grade schooler. End of speech, KUSD, please change the schedule, it’s obviously better and safer for EVERYONE if grade schools start earlier and high schools start later. Thank you for whoever took the time to read this.
ZERO stars. Avoid our big mistake by going private! In KUSD, you will find many teachers who are completely devoted to providing the best education they know how. And for them we are entirely grateful!! Then you have the teachers who will stage a sick out because they don’t want to teach in person. Lastly, you have a school board who is anti-student, pro-union all the way. Through this year of the virus, they have put their own needs before the students and are now insinuating keeping masks on our children for the 2021-2022 school year. Though vaccines and antibodies and immunity exists, they wish to continue with their power hungry agenda by maintaining ultimate control on these poor children, which is sickening. If they retract their unscientific proposals for the coming year, I’ll delete my comment.
