Student support is terrible they don’t care about anyone just money and statistics. (A small number of teachers are helpful) but for the most part the whole senior team are useless. The maths department is great. The science and English departments are decent. The computer science department is awful the teachers have 1990s knowledge of computers back when they were coding in pascal and none of it relates to today. History department is good too, rest is just average. Facilities are poor and the school offer hardly any extra curricular activities. Canteen has no variety too, ate chicken burgers everyday for years. If you want a school with tons of student , teacher support and a range of extra curricular activities to do. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE. The sixth form is awful too there’s about 200 students cramped into a tiny building and you can’t even leave for lunch half the days.
It is fair to say this school has changed dramatically in the last decade let alone the last 100 years. It’s unfortunate to hear about some of the experiences other reviewers have had but I can assure you the school, it’s pupils and the whole community in general has changed dramatically for the better. The current Headmaster is cut throat in his ways and doesn’t allow for any funny business to occur. If such silly incidents occur, however, they are met with due action and students are appropriately punished.

It is no wonder OFSTED has rated the school OUTSTANDING on multiple reports. The school is diverse throughout with a respectful and open minded student body and faculty.

Fear not parents, sending your child here will not be a mistake and I can assure you they will have a great experience with an abundance of opportunities.

Kids aren’t treated well in this school and the Heads/ teachers / Pa’s are very rude to the parents. They simply do not care about the children , intimidate and fob them off, simply numbers that mean extra money for them. Teachers are mainly of southern Asian origin. I wouldn’t recommend at all.
Great school, I am soon going to finish year 8 and so far i have learnt way more than i thought i have and this school has really encouraging teachers that help you. This school teaches French as well as German and some schools don’t do that so you may have a choice over which language you want to choose for GCSEs. Would definatly recommend this schools as it is also in the top 10 or 5 best schools in the UK which is good i guess .
Please ingnor the negative comments about bullying or anything like that as there has been no bullying for a long while.
When I attended Handsworth Grammar School in 1951 the teacher pupil tolerance was very low, as such I did very badly and achieved nothing until I got a grip in the fifth form 5A as it was then. In the first year Miss Keeling, evil maths teacher, was so nasty and lacking any skills whatsoever in encouraging pupils to understand, because she knew it she expected us to know it too by implication. What a nightmare it was. After leaving the school with three O-level I took control of my own education. Went to night school ONC, HNC BSc and MSc (B’Ham U) eventually achieved at the age of 24.. NO thenks to HG school whatsoever. At my MSc degree ceremony, Birmingham University, someone in the congregation cheered when my school was named, little did they know of my disdain and disgust of that school!
