One of the most segregated, non diverse, schools I have ever worked for. The students are misbehaved, out of control and like most charter schools in Huntington Park most of the students probably are not prepared for the next level(High School). The majority of the students are far below reading, writing, and math levels. Poorly lit , furnished, classrooms, that are grossly understaffed. The students often come to class unprepared without writing utensils nor other needed materials. Students are usually not directed from using English over Spanish. The school’s office staff give out a very negative energy level upon entering the building. As an African American the only African Teacher at the school I was immediately greeted with negativity. (The kind of energy that is received when as a minority you feel the coldest reception/energy)The students abuse the usage of the “N” word without any consequences in front of office and the teaching staff without redirecting. The staff usually ignore this behavior. The students are rarely subjected to any punishment for poor behavior of any kind from physical to mental misconduct. As for usage with the chrome books many of the sites that are inappropriate are not blocked from students and in several instances I have had to direct students from inappropriate sites. What are your school policies? As for cell phones if they are being checked the students somehow manage to get phones into the classroom. (Just do a random check and you will find my observations true). My name is John Hopson and I am not choosing to remain anonymous. I was a substitute teacher subjected to very harsh and unfair treatment. I was accused of threatening the students. Which I did not. However, I stated to the students that” their behavior was stupid” and for that I was released. I understand the school has to make decisions that support the students when an accusation is made against the teacher;however, it’s the behavior prior and how they treated me when vacating the institution. They treated me as though I was a criminal and that is inexcusable. I have witnessed classrooms without credential support staff. I have witnessed dyslexia and other learning disorders that have gone unaddressed. Classrooms that have gone unattended without a credential teacher for extended periods at a time. I stand behind all that I claim and if there are journalists, politicians, or concerned citizens you are more than welcome to reach out to me. In fairness to this school most of the schools in the Huntington Park area are not diverse and are very hostile towards the African American teachers and treat them as outsiders by the administration and teachers. I was not fired for what occurred but I am very bitter as I have remained silent for three years and now I want my voice to be heard. As substitute teachers we are instructed to babysit versus teaching students and that is the attitude many subs have taken. On one final note by law I am a mandated reporter and by law I am to report any troubling events witnessed.
The best and the worst school out there. Yes, it has great teachers and teaching as well but the problem was the environment of the school. I was a student in that school since 5th grade through middle school. The environment was toxic between students. Many teachers quit or got fired from this school, the school had many substitute teachers. Some of the worst things that happened in the school was teaching students about “identity” and replacing history classes with “acceptance” and teaching students about sexual orientations in the grade levels of 5th and through 8th grade. This school is an example of a toxic environment that deracinates the mentality including corrupting these students.
