Highland Prep is by far the most ridiculous school. The rules and policies are over the top. The office staff help with absolutely nothing, and they will fail you even if your top five in your class. Having the slightest disagreement will send you to the bottom of the list because all they do is play favorites. As for Doctor Clark, he has no respect for any of his students nor for the parents. He will literally call you out in class in front of everyone because he feels the need to make you feel small to fill his huge ego. The teachers can’t even stand the policies and the practices that highland plays. A big shout out to the teachers that actually help and understand that life isn’t always perfect, and that there will be times that every student can’t always follow school rules. If you really want a high school experience, do not attend this prep. I have worked my butt off since day one of attending highland, and I’ve respected everyone and every rule to only fail me in the end because I had to miss five days of school for something that was planned ahead on the same dates each year. No respect for anything nor did they try to work with me. Now with all the work I’ve done, I will receive no credit for the last quarter because of absences. I have stopped going to highland, and it has been the best decision of my life. If you want your child to feel like they matter, do not attend highland prep. In fact, I went to the office a month in advance to see if I could do something about me missing tests. They did nothing to work with me. Years before, Ive missed the last three days of the final week, and teachers worked with me to get my test done. But this year , my senior year, they did absolutely nothing to help my grades. Now that I transferred schools to California, they havent been able to send my transcripts for the last two weeks, when we requested it. Because they didnt work with me, my grades and schooling are being messed up. The office has not worked with me nor my family with transferring my transcripts. I havent been able to attend any other school which is ruining my senior year which shows what kind of care they have for their students.
I offer the following comments that have shaped my perceptions of the Madison Highland Prep landscape.
I worked as a mathematics teacher for 6 years, and during that time I found that the administrative team supported students and their families with grace and dignity. Nobody can be 100% happy, but this team of diligent people deserve careful consideration.
For 6 years I worked with the families who came looking for a place that would challenge their children. Someplace more than just an basic high school, but one that actually pushed their child way beyond their comfort zones. A place where activities outside of the academic world offered choices for students to find their social “wheelhouse.” I got caught in that kind of wheelhouse when students insisted on a chess club and so was born a club and team.
Students at MHP have great latitude to self-actualize. You want to engineer something, you can. You want to do a deep-dive into a complex literary text – no problem. You want to start a new club – great – find a faculty sponsor and away you go!!
I left MHP as a faculty member because of an amazing opportunity that availed itself for my family. Otherwise I would have continued my employment (I hope). All else aside, inquire about the number of fights, the dropout rate, the number of teen pregnancies, or the use of drugs on campus. You will likely appreciate the frank direct responses you get to these questions as well as questions about the academic value the curriculum provides.
I have found that MHP is a college prep school in reality. This is not college prep in name alone, but in reality. Students can realize college credit before high school graduation.
I will cherish my partners in education at MHP, and the learning environment that was created for students. Am I biased? Yes, I likely am a biased contributor, but I offer these comments as a pathway to questions you may ask when you visit the school to see for yourself if this is the right place for your child(ren).
Graciously offered – Mr Jonathan Young-Scaggs; past mathematics faculty (primarily 9th grade: Algebra 1)
This place is a total train wreck to say at the very least.. Its such a shady operation ran by shady administration. That little Mr Kerry or Mr Clark guy acts nice when us parents are around, but that couldnt be further than the truth. My child, as well as their fellow students have reported to me some of the comments and behavior of him and his administration. Mr Mack, however, has helped my child a lot in preparing for college. The teachers are okay but they cant seem to fill in enough positions. When i enrolled my daughter to a college prep school, i had such high expectations, however, it was actually the worst possible place for her. The administration is a joke. Mr Kerry is a very rude insecure man that takes his insecurities out on the students. His little sidekick Ms Rodriguez is almost just as bad as him.The guy in the office, Dustin George, was incredibly rude and condescending. He makes it feel like youre wasting his time.. Parents, be warned. The administration is horrible and the whole operation is so shady. I apologize to my daughter for enrolling her there. She has been very depressed and stressed here
