This school was great, years ago before a new principal took over. Since then it has turned into a complete mess in which students suffer the most. A few of the staff fail at understanding disability issues, and my concerns since the beginning of the 2015-216 school year have been completely ignored. Paperwork documenting my youngest sons disability, lost, even though I brought it in twice, even though there is proof that I had requested thee documents at the pediatricians office. They claim they need this documentation to provide accommodations, but they lose it. Next time I plan to record myself handing the staff member in the front the documentation so that I have solid roof (although I have noticed that many places have no recording policies for reasons, sadly this prevents people from being held accountable and continues to allow for harm to oppressed minority groups.) A few times I attempted to discuss both my sons disabilities and accommodations with the school, the people I spoke to deflected, victim blamed, and just acted in a very ignorant and discriminatory manner using terms like “policy” as a means to continue to discriminate and dehumanize my kids, failing to acknowledge that “policy” does not and should not override civil human rights. When things like this happens it violates a disabled persons right to an accessible education, bodily autonomy, and right to be treated like a person.. Besides that, I heard that many good educators were fired and that the school has a teacher shortage (although I am not sure how exact this is).
The staff at this school need to learn a little bit about civil rights, and they need to listen to disabled people and disabled advocates (I am a disabled person myself). When you choose to not listen to us, and place “policy” which only harms us upon us, you are not making education accessible for us as well as are setting a standard that disabled people do not belong in society.
I was hesitant to enroll my daughter here last year due to the bad reviews. I’m so glad I did. My only issue this year has been the lack of Covid protocols but isn’t the administrators fault, its the company itself. Having said that, the teachers have been amazing. They’re incredibly caring and supportive. The AP is always available if needed and she goes above and beyond to address parents’ concerns. My daughter is excelling here and I’m always surprised by all that she shares about what she has learned each day. My only wish is that there be more opportunities for parent involvement and that parents actually get themselves involved. Prior to moving here she was at a high performing charter in miami and there were always ways parents could be a part of the learning from parent organized trunk or treating to gallery night at school. it eased some of the extra work the teachers had to take on and got us to know one another better. either way, so happy with our choice.
As a parent I love this school. My children and I have had many good experiences here. Very few problems. My son has been in this school for 3 years since VPK. Love Mrs. Baughknight. My daughter has been here for 6 years. I live in fort Myers and work in Bonita springs. It is a challenge to get them to and from school but I wouldn’t change them for anything. I would rather struggle then switch them schools. I did have a few problems but they were handled right away by the teachers, office staff and Mr. Gomez. Everything was taken care of immediately. Without further issues. I have met many teachers here and have always found them very caring and concerned with any issues I felt needed attention. My children are very happy here and love their teachers and friends.
