This morning I was passing the Montessori Day School and noticed a very sick pigeon against the wall just to the right of the entrance door. I was in the process of rescuing this pigeon when one of your teachers with a group of young students exited the school. The teacher asked me to step aside to allow the children to line up against the wall. I said as soon as I get this sick pigeon..she said my kids are more important than a pigeon
This teacher lost the opportunity to teach these children a lesson in compassion (which would have been in keeping with the Montessori goals), and care for a very sick and possibly dying bird. She could have said children, we must wait while this woman rescues a very sick pigeon and then we can go on with our class.
Instead she became dismissive of what I was attempting to do.
I shutter to think what she would have done had I not been there. Maria Montessori would have been saddened.
Enrolling our daughter at MDS was the best decision we could have made for her. Over the past 3 years, we’ve seen how the Montessori philosophy has helped build her independence, curiosity, and confidence. But more importantly, her teachers over the years have been fun, dedicated, and incredibly nurturing, and they’ve given her such a wonderful view of learning and what a great place school can be. When I drop her off in the morning, she is greeted warmly and welcomed into class to begin her day as an independent little person! At pickup, she is always excited to tell me about what she and her friends did that day, and has some fun and interesting fact to report.
She’s moving on to Kindergarten next year, but luckily her younger sister will be starting at MDS, so we have a few more years to look forward to in this wonderful school and community!
This is a terrible school. It is extremely over-priced for the low quality of teaching that goes on. They do age inappropriate lessons that either totally confuse kids or give children bad messages. The teachers were cold to the children, failing to greet them as the little 2,3 & 4 year olds entered the classroom and teachers let the children dictate the social dynamic of the classroom, making for a clique-y, divided environment. The classrooms are cluttered which emphasizes the divisions. The “art” projects the kids have to do completely lack creativity and often involve coloring in the lines of a photo-copied image. Many parents complain and feel unsatisfied at this school but are there because it is conveniently located and there aren’t enough known options.
I wish we could get back the precious time we wasted there.
