If I could describe NWSA High School in one word, it would be family. I have made the most friends ever since coming to this school, and I do not regret my decision of accepting my seat for the time that I was there. The arts faculty are very passionate about what they do and really push for the students to be the best that they can possibly be. It’s always a pleasure to come and support my friends in strands other than my own at their concerts and watch all the hard work they put into their talent. Communication between the high school and college divisions needs to improve massively, especially as most of the academic faculty are employed by the principal of the high school through the public school system, and the arts faculty are employed by the deans of the respective arts strands through Miami Dade College. Academics at this school also need to be improved, especially in math and science. The student services department also needs to do a better job at alleviating the students’ stress and assisting students in the college application process, instead of intimidating them that if they do something wrong along the way it’s the student’s problem. Administration preaches to students about the importance of handling responsibilities especially as a high school with an open campus, yet sometimes don’t stay true to what they claim when the administrators themselves are disrespectful, and don’t take responsibility for misbehaved students or issues that arise about students’ grades. From experience and observation, some of the music faculty also needs to be nicer when giving feedback and criticism to the students, especially when managing frustration or anxiety, in addition to treating each student equally without giving personal preference to one student over another for their talents.
The vocal branch of New World School of the Art needs to place a dual control system that acknowledges that the vocal coach (outside vendors) are providing the correct amount of lessons as stipulated into their plan of study for each child. Last year, their way of controlling the lessons provided was a sign-in sheet that the vendor wrote down the time and date of visitation but nothing where the student actually confirms receiving said class. Mind you the kids will get evaluated for their performance even if they get to practice or not the song with the vocal coach. The school does have some amazing teachers, yet there are plenty that will never reply to an email even if there are follow-ups done. Administration needs additional training/knowledge of state laws regarding education in order to properly guide parents if/when needed.
I graduated from the college division two years ago and I loved my experience there. I learned so much and all my professors were wonderful ( Because its a small school, I got one on one attention with each and every one of them). If you are serious about the Arts, then New World is for you.
