I’ve seen the principal and his vices one time since the 2017-2018 school year started, which tells me they are off campus a lot, or locked away in their offices. Either way, they are inattentive and primarily inaccessible. When we asked principal Hill if he had two minutes to speak with us, he said “no”. When asked if he could check his calendar to schedule time to speak with us, he said “no”. He’s rude, disrespectful, and I suspect racially insensitive and culturally biased. As he threatened criminalization when my husband went to our son’s class to pick him up, after we were called and told he was punched in the face, and glasses stomped on and broken by another student. Our child has sensory issues and autism. A puzzle piece, we were told, allows us to go to his class without going to the office first. Yet, criminal proceedings were still threatened, and no concern was ever shown regarding my son’s injuries, bullying, nor the neglect of the teacher. This school is unfit to house an Autism program, as these teachers, students and classes are at the bottom of the school’s priority list, with only one teacher and one full-time paraprofessional for a class of 13 to 14 boys on the spectrum, ranging from non-verbal physically aggressive to “high functioning” autism with adhd. Nickajack has a singular dedicated AU teacher, consistent paras, a helpful nurse, and friendly, dutiful speech and OT therapists. Their administration is the pits, however.
Horrible school for minorities. A 7 year old came home crying countless times because of the treatment he received. He was bullied by a student. I brought my concerns to the teacher. The teacher justified the students actions. The teacher then allowed that bully to distribute the candy the 7 year old brought while he sat there sad. After raising multiple concerns, the school then went digging and found small reasons to kick the 7 year old out of an after school program. There are so many more issues. If you are having problems, please email me. I am currently, along with several others, in the process of filing a class action lawsuit against this school. No child should go home feeling the way this 7 year old does.
I tutor an LD student who goes to Nickajack. The faculty and staff are wonderful and dedicated to provided the best education and care. Their parent outreach is phenomenal. They go out of their way to provide information about classroom assignments and curriculum goals and strategies. I go on the website and get regular updates on grading assignments and what the class is learning each week, with supplemental videos and online tutorials that complement the lesson plans. I really think this is a great school with many wonderful resources available for any child who needs hands on learning. They are wonderful here and always available for help. Thank you Nickajack for doing what you do.
