This school is the worst I’ve ever seen. The teachers do their own grading scale and the principal isn’t aware of what those are. In more than one class a “45” was considered a passing grade. The principal doesn’t seem involved much. They don’t teach real sex ed, but only abstinence. However, with this being Utah I hear that’s actually the law and normal; I find that sad.

I hear about the high graduation rates, when adjusting grading scales gives the high rates those rates are artificially inflated and not true accounts. I hear about high SAT scores, those are also artificially inflated. You don’t get a true picture when the only ones taking the exam are the more intelligent; You aren’t getting scores from the lesser intelligent because they aren’t taking the tests to compare and calculate the statistics.

After 2 weeks at this school I pulled my daughter out and home-schooled her. The art teacher at North Layton initially gave my daughter an “F” after only being here for 2 weeks. When I asked him about it, he said he wasn’t sure why he gave her that grade. He agreed that she wasn’t there long enough to earn an F. He then looked at my daughter and asked her, “What grade do you want?” My response was, “What grade did she EARN? He gave her a “pass.” The principal didn’t understand why I didn’t want an unearned “F” on my daughter’s transcript if I was just going to home-school her. She actually asked me, “Why does it matter what grades are on her transcript if you’re just going to home-school her?”

School uniforms do not reduce the fights as the principal thinks. My daughter texted me daily telling me how many fights there were. Upon enrolling, I was told there were only 7 fights the previous year; My daughter witnessed more than 7 the first week she was there.

The principal and teachers here are clueless and don’t seem to care about education, just getting kids out the door and increasing their graduation numbers. I’ve never seen such a horrific idea of education until I enrolled my daughter in this school. Education here is quite laughable.

I hated this school. I attended this school for my 8th and 9th grade year (2014-2016). The teachers I feel didnt give a crap about what the students do most the time. They had rules from when I was there that even the teachers would break but no one cared. For example when I went there you were only allowed to have natural colored hair, meaning no fun colors like purple, green, blue, pink, etc. But multiple teacher had “non natural” hair colors for the whole year and never got called out on it. The councilor and front desk people were extremely annoying. At the end of my 9th grade year my teacher made a mistake on my grade giving me a “C” as my finial grade instead of an “A” she told me was my final grade. So my mom and I went to talk to the counselors during the summer to change my grade, but they said “you need to talk to your teacher about it, but why change it? You still got credit for that class.” Now if your like me, you would be a very too about this because even though I got credit, it brings down my GPA from a 3.8 to 3.7. Now this might not seem a lot but this also means I have to score even higher on my ACT test to get into my early college program. It’s just frustrating but I have to work harder for the school mistake. It’s not that easy to get help from teachers at North Layton Junior High to either whether you know the topic or not they’re going to MoveOn and they don’t really check if you know the topic or not. Overall the school had a very depressing atmosphere to it and it’s not something that you would want to wake up every day to knowing that you have to go to this depressing horrible place and I’m not just saying that because it’s school.
This school is not great, but it definitely is not the worst. I know much worse schools. Now with the new principal, Mr. Campbell, the school has become MUCH better than in the past. He has done renovations that has made it safer, and a lot cleaner. It is also very accepting of the LGBTQ+ community. But the cons outweigh the pros.

One of the major problems here is lunch. The food is often cold, soggy, and/or under cooked. They might as well serve raw chicken here, since they can’t even cook it. Most of the lunch ladies are impatient and rude to the students and the other lunch ladies. Not to mention a ridiculous amount of the food is moldy.

The teachers enjoy to ridicule the students, from what I’ve seen, they especially like to do so to the ones who seem most troubled. I have seen a teacher send a student to ISS for coughing.

The amount of depressed students here is overwhelming. A few of my friends (I won’t give names because privacy) have done some form of self harm. In fact, a majority of the students here have done some form of self harming.

Other notes: Many students yell out racial slurs without any form of consequence. A few students have smoked. A lot of rumors have been spread. 8th and 9th graders are asses to the 7th graders.

There you have it. NLJH.
