My oldest went to Northwood lower school prior to our moving to Summerville several years ago. We were active with the school and knew other parents; I even helped coach his basketball team. They took so long to relocate to their new site that we had to switch schools due to distance. My youngest was attending The Oaks Christian School in Summerville this year until it decided to close. He is very extroverted (teachers have to remind him to be quiet a lot) but not a bad kid by any stretch of the imagination. Consequently, he had a lot of instances on his behavior report where he had to be reminded to be quiet. Additionally, there was an instance on this report where a substitute teacher overheard my son and two other boys using ‘inappropriate language’ on the playground talking about something they had seen on YouTube of a sexual nature. Mind you, they were using actual biological terms–not slang. Also, keep in mind that these were 12-year old boys. I am not sure why this gentleman took such issue with this, but he logged it on their records. Mrs. Anderson from Northwood contacted me a few days ago and advised that she and the Headmaster had decided that they would not be able to accept my son at their school for these specific reasons. Does that sound like a Christian school to you? My son doesn’t use drugs, he isn’t violent, he has never been suspended, he makes exemplary grades, etc. A ‘Christian’ school has rejected him because he talked too much and was overheard talking about sex on the playground with other boys. Does this not happen at Northwood? I don’t see how a school can call itself Christian and reject students for stupid reasons like this. I attended Christian schools, and this is FAR from a Christian approach. This is elitist–plain and simple. They want to be Pinewood. So sorry I ever spent a dime here with my oldest years ago, but so glad I know who you are now. I want a school that nurtures faith and sets an example thru behavior–not one that will turn my son into a frat boy. You can keep that.
My daughter has attended Northwood Academy since she was 3 years old. She is 13 now and in 8th grade. Never been suspended or had disciplinary problems. Never failed a class. She was on honors until covid hit. The school has just recommended her expulsion, so we had to withdraw her. The reason was “conspiring with another student to bring an illegal device into the school that could harm other students.” My daughter did not have the vape in her possession and was not accused of vaping in the bathroom. She was basically lookout. The other had the vape. My daughter should have been suspended for her immature decision, but to throw her in the garbage for this is beyond the pale. This is not a Christian school anymore, it is an elitist school. My ex and I regret having spent almost $100,000 in 10 years so they could do this to my daughter the first time she gets in trouble. Incredible.
