Back then the school had very high expectations and was an excellent school to attend.
The teachers were very friendly and helpful.
The headteacher Sir John Rowling (RIP)
was an excellent head of the school and it’s mostly down to him why the school was so successful back then.
Yes it still had its problems, like the congestion when moving from one lesson to the next.
It needs serious funding and development work to make it appropriate for the number of students it takes in. Trying to get from lesson to lesson with no time in between was brutal because the halls were always packed, trying to get into your locker was like going spelunking and godforbid you wanted hot food at lunch (which had no healthy options available and often the potatoes and pasta weren’t cooked through) because the queues are so busy.
The lack of facilities is genuinely astounding for the 4th highest rated school in the area, many classrooms didn’t have projectors or fans. But for me the worst facility issue was the toilets. 13 toilets for around 750 people in the whole school, it was ridiculous and the ones that were there weren’t exactly in the best state of repair.
There are other problems with the actual structure inside the school, the behaviour policy can be ridiculous and they hand out detentions like party favours, they have a ‘mental health week’ about 900 times a year but there isn’t a decently structured support system for the students to use if they need to.
The teachers were all lovely though and did their best and I’m so thankful I walked out with the grades I did, but talking to people from other schools after leaving made me realise was a hit and miss experience it was going here.
