I was a student of OLA for 9 years. As a disabled student that attended from kindergarten to 8th grade, this is not a school meant for children of disability. Oaklawn does not respect or consider the physical, mental and emotional life factors of children with disabilities and if your child has a disability that does not require a caregiver or full supervision then said child’s disability will not be taken seriously. Staff members over look the extent of what disabled students have to do and overcome to thrive and then disregard the student’s disability completely simply because the child can thrive in a controlled educational setting. This is a huge problem because it shows that OLA’s views on people of disability is very closed minded and staff expects disabled children/students to be completely helpless and incapable of doing the simplistic task that are given in school. I went through many trials and tribulations mentally, emotionally and physically because of my disability while at OLA and simply because in their controlled environment I was eventually able to thrive the fact that I had to take extra precautions and go through many alternatives in order to thrive was disregarded completely. If the disability of the child/student does not effect OLA staff then they completely undermine the disability and the affects it has on the child outside of that controlled environment. Thanks to Oaklawn Language Academy’s ignorance and disregard towards people with disabilities I lost the government aid I was receiving for my disability as a child. Growing into an independent teen and trying to live as an independent young adult has been and still is difficult to this day because of my disability. As an disabled adult I need that aid more than ever now and because of OLA, a school that has no real education on or sympathy for their disabled students I have to go through more trials and tribulations now just to be even considered for disability aid. To all parents and guardians with disabled children, if you want your child to be able to thrive not only now in the present but also in the future and get the understanding and help they need in order to thrive DO NOT send them to this school. I highly do not recommend Oakland Language Academy. I would hate for a child to have to go through what I go through now all because of this school’s ignorance and ableistic mindset.
I went to the assistant principal (Daniel B.) due to the fact that my second grader had been bullied gave him a week to contact me after no reply I went in to speak with him and asked him had he done anything about the situation with the bullying and he asked me to refresh and his memory in reference to what had happened to my daughter. Which means he has not dealt with the issue he’s very out of touch with the children and with the parents my daughter is in a place where she is not emotionally safe nor does she feel that she’s safe in Oaklawn that is a problem and it’s a bigger problem when people that are in his position don’t take heed to the children’s cry….. DON’T BE FOOLED BY THE REVIEWS!!!
