My child went here for less than a year and we removed her after that. The only reason we didn’t pull her out earlier was because of her teacher. She had such a fantastic teacher who we really loved. The downsides of the school are far too great to outweigh the good. It is a very run down building. They are clearly out of space, as everything from the hallways to the classrooms are crowded. The classes are smaller overall, but you can still have 20 kids in a classroom. For example, there were two kindergarten classes, each with approximately 20 students. The building almost looked in disarray…holes in the ceiling throughout and frequently trying to do repairs to keep up. The outside area is deplorable, as it sits amongst multiple trucking companies. There are no good green areas for the kids to play in. Their open “field” has far too much dirt and not enough grass. I counted too many times when the front door was left unlocked and no staff monitoring the entrance. Even a few times, the side doors were left unlocked and unattended. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but in the end, my child’s education came first and we had to remove her. This school needs to realize that they need a better space. They are out of space and in a crumbling building. Time to make some drastic changes to improve the infrastructure or just throw in the towel.
This is our daughter’s 4th year at Odyssey and we love it, but most importantly, our daughter loves it. Odyssey is a small, community school with a great family feel that provides an equal, if not better, education than the surrounding district schools. There are plenty of family events and opportunities to volunteer in the classroom or around the school. Faculty members are extremely dedicated and are some of the most hard-working teachers I have ever met. They know all of the children and strive to meet their individual needs. Other things we like: a free, diverse public school with smaller class sizes, parapros in every classroom through 5th grade, field trip opportunities (Washington DC, TN Aquarium, National Weather Service, Savannah, Fox Theatre, Water Treatment facility, Center for Puppetry Arts, ZooAtlanta, and much more), excellent band and arts program, and excellent family events like International Night, Thanksgiving Feast, Touch A Truck, Talent Show, Fall Festival, Dinner with Santa. They encourage community involvement by providing opportunities to support Salvation Army, Food Pantry, Heifer International, Habitat for Humanity, Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, Relay for Life and others. There are lots of things to love at Odyssey. We wouldn’t want our child anywhere else and we wish it went through High School.
The teachers are sweet but I agree with the previous review, my son is in kindergarten and is now further behind. It is very difficult to get him caught up to pass to first grade. I took him out right after Christmas break and enrolled him into a public school. I thought this school being it was a smaller class would help them more on a one on one but no. He was going to school but coming home not learning or improving. There was horrible communication from the teachers and no organization. I feel I was doing more at home than he was at school. There was a Spanish kid in my sons class he knows nothing of English and the school doesn’t do anything to help him learn either. I went to have lunch with my son and the teachers came up to me asking to translate why the little boy kept waving around his dollar all day and it was because he was thirsty. It breaks my heart because i know he’s not being properly educated as well. It’s frustrating when it feels as if they’re still in day care rather than in school. I’m glad I took him out. I was raised in public school and graduated in honors. I have nothing against public schools and now I see it is better than a charter. Im sorry but I would not recommend this school. ??
