I am a concerned parent.
I was on a tour of the Orchard School (Roxbury MA) and I witnessed something very disturbing. In a classroom were four adults with a young child caged like an animal. The child was being rough handled. I understand that kids can be difficult at times and may sometimes need intervention to be calmed, but I am sure they are a million other ways to calm a child. Just imagine yourself in a very small confined space with four individuals hovering over you. What would be your natural instinct? I do not know about you but mine would be to get out of that confined space. It is the same with a young child. When a child is angry and he/she is placed in a very small confined space with adults hovering over him/her, then that child’s natural instinct is to get away. Caging a child makes the situation worse. !!!!That poor child.!!! My heart bleeds for him. I was so disturbed by that that I could not sleep that night. I am also mad at myself for not immediately reporting it to the principal. I did leave him a message the next day. As parents we need to know that when our children are in the hands of their educators that they are cared for the same way parents would. If you are a parent of a child at Orchard Gardens, especially if your child has an IEP or have behavioral or aggressive issues, please I implore you to ask your child daily if he or she was mishandled/rough handled by an adult. Teachers are supposed to be nurturers and care givers, don’t get me wrong, most are but there are a few who are vicious and in my opinion should not be caring for our children.
We all get angry when we see or hear someone abusing animals; however, it is ok for us to treat young children the same way? They are young children and unfortunately, they do not always do what they are told. But we CANNOT forget that they are fragile and that form of treatment may not always be effective but it can also be harmful. I am sure there are plenty of other methods we can use to calm aggressive children. Please let’s use them.
I used to go here, And they taught kids exactly how they were supposed to be taught they gave kids breaks, comfy furniture and sleep if needed. They will listen to you if things are happening at home. Overall I loved the school.
this is the best middle school in the whole city of Boston. i gave a lots of headaches to Mr.Peter LeRoy i wish i can go back and be a good student.
