Although the teachers are pretty nice, I honestly think it’s a waste of time to send your child to this school. To be honest, as a student who has “studied” here for 2 years, I haven’t learned much during these two years.
As you may know, Ormiston Junior College is a school for students years 7-10. All years 7-10s are put into mixed classes except for Hauora (Health+Wellbeing class). Personally, I would say that this type of grouping for classes like math and English is very unorganized. You won’t get the amount of education you need at the year level you’re on.
Although the academics aren’t that good, the sports are OKAY. Volleyball is a popular sport at OJC, and so is Netball and Basketball (?).
The teachers are caring and nice but most of them cannot teach. They have poor teaching skills and all they do is for you to do work based on knowledge you haven’t been taught. Most students at this school are okay. Although there are people who may be a bad influence. Once I caught someone vaping in the girl’s bathroom during lunchtime.
The teachers for the most part are pretty nice, they are like your bro , they can help you and have fun with you. If you want your child to stay happy and muck around in a school like Ormiston Junior. Go for it! Yes it is fun to stay in this school and play games, in terms of learning something new, you barely learn anything, it is more like 1 piece of learning every 3 months. That ain’t a lot, I have studied here in this school for approximately 2 years.
In this school you have to do badges, which is basically a process that every student must achieve, if you cannot achieve it you are considered a failure by the school system, on the other hand teachers and students will most likely cheer you on to try and finish your badges. There is only 2 main subjects; Math and English, they are from 40 minutes to a hour. Other subjects in this School are considered minor subjects. The lack of options in this school makes this schools considered a bad place if you want your child to thrive in the education system.
Overall come to this school to play, but go to Macleans for slightly better learning. All schools in New Zealand are the same, no matter what, you can always sneak your way through to play games, watch YouTube during classes, and like me. Writing this review while in a class that makes me learn about Computers that may not even follow your passions.
Always make sure to send your child to a school that won’t be depressed and bored at a school and that is able to follow your child’s passions. Not the parents nor what the school wants the child to go through.
Your child’s experience in this school may be a bit rough, Children as young 12 may experience PDA which is quite a serious problem. There is a large problem about drugs and vaping in this schools, where during lunchtimes you can see people vaping in the bathrooms. People taking drugs in empty rooms just before school. It is a nasty place if your children experiences these before 14.
