This year I joined in the 8th grade coming from public school and so far it is a great school and they really make an effort to please each student, although they do struggle with a few things. I think in the grades 6-8 they have a hard time figuring out discipline for the children. Many people have been through sevral meeting and been threatened to be expelled or suspended without any prior warnings. To essentially control the kids in the higher grades they make them sighn contracts or else they will be expelled having to pay the rest of the tuition. This year our class (8th grade 2016) has had to sighn a contract with a list full of class rules and we have all been threatened to not go on the 8th grade trip if we break the contract rules a set amount of times. I have experienced a struggled with the dress code and had talked to many teachers about why the dress code is so strict in the middle school ages. From what I have noticed they tend to be very sexist and target the 8th grade. There is no leggings aloud and you will be forced to put a sweater on if your bra strap is showing. If you break the dress code three times in the 8th grade you will be suspended from school for a day, interupting your learning.
Portland Waldorf School is a place where your child can thrive, and that you can call home. It’s a warm environment that celebrates the seasons as a community, and brings art and beauty into everything it does. My three children all love coming to school every day. They feel valued, noticed, and respected. I am impressed with the rigorous academic content my children are learning. I appreciate how the children are taught through movement and play, so they enjoy learning. I love that they are given ample time to play outside and move their bodies. I appreciate that music lessons and singing are incorporated into the curriculum, as are handwork and regular field trips. This school truly provides a beautiful well-rounded education.
We moved to the Portland Waldorf School 3 years ago, and couldn’t be happier. As a parent its important for me that my childs creative spirit does not get lost in educational bench marking. The teacher’s nurturing, and at the same time, structured environment encourages them to become lifelong learners and seekers of knowledge. My son enjoys learning because it has been a pleasant and fun experience at school. Not only is he playing outside, rain or shine, he is learning 2 languages, a musical instrument and complicated math. Our family couldn’t be happier
