I went to PS 178 from 1940 through 1942 eighty years ago when it was a Junior high School. Earlier I went to PS 144 at Park Place and Howard which no longer exists. 178 was at an intersection of Black and Jewish neighborhoods both quite poor. The children were constantly “struggling” to get to school without being beaten. I was personally mugged by hoodlums with knives on the stairs within the school itself. It was useless to complain to the teachers because they were fearful of being beaten. My parents actually moved from the neighborhood so that my brother and I could attend a better run school in a respectable neighborhood.
If it still operates I hope it was improved…
I am deeply horrified by the bullying incident that continuously occured at this school, involving 6yr old Timir being kicked in the groin repeatedly and how lightly this incident was taken. This child may have been permanently damaged both emotionally and physically. When we leave our children in the care of school administrators, we expect them to be safe and protected…not abused and ignored. Shame on everyone involved. Everyone who knew this child was being abused and treated this incident like it was the norm. I hope everyone involved will be held responsible so no other child will be subjected to such a horrific nightmare.
