As a prior student of this school, I have to say that it was absolutely horrible compared to my middle school that I currently go to now (I am nearing the end of my 8th grade year, and I currently attend Riverside Preparatory Middle School. I highly recommend their elementary, middle, and high school over this one).
I went to Puesta from kindergarten to 6th grade… and several experiences have led me to grow a hatred for this place. Both the staff and students alike DESTROYED my self-confidence and mental/emotional wellness.
As a start, kindergarten through second grade was fantastic. I had a great time, everything seemed amazing and I had a lot of good relationships with my teachers. They were kind and friendly, and always were willing to help I and my peers with anything we needed.
That was, up until the administration was changed in 2016. We had gained a new principal who talked more about building the school’s environment instead of taking necessary action to do so. What actions WERE taken did more harm than good from a student’s perspective. Alongside administration change, there was also the issue of the teachers and the way discipline was enforced.
In the 3rd grade, I had a teacher who would overload her students with packets of homework, and if you did not understand your homework, would rush through an explanation, then get frustrated for not completing the packet. She also tended to get mad at her students for no reason at all; I was scolded for not completely understanding a subject and not answering her question the way she wanted. As well, while I was in the 6th grade and my brother was in the 5th, my brother’s line was walking past her’s, and she shoved my brother so she could get her line to go past faster.
Another issue that I will bring up is bullying. I had an issue with being bullied, and I went to my teacher to tell her about what the other student kept telling me. Instead of the teacher talking to the student privately, I and the student were forced to converse with one another. This made me frustrated, since this only made matters worse. They have not changed the way they make their students interact to “fix” the issue, either.
In my 6th grade, I had a newer teacher who had only arrived the year before. She was nice at the start, but it seemed to get worse throughout the year. I was starting to become a little more confident in myself, and due to this, I was bullied by many, including my teacher. She would make comments, such as teasing me for learning something new, and has even singled me out in front of the entire class more than once.
There was also the issue with the Think Together (after school) program. With a constant routine with no room for breaks or free time, students would have to deal with terrible teaching staff, bullying, and disregard for injury (I had a sprained ankle and was forced to play during outside activity time). I had also gotten my items stolen, and the teachers took no responsibility for finding who took my things. Disciplinary actions were far from disciplinary, and hardly did anything.
Now, collectively, the cons outweigh the pros. Although there are a few kind and compassionate staff members, yourself or your student, WILL get burnout from this school due to the overload of homework and assignments they are given. You may deal with bullying, in which the teachers do not handle well in my opinion.
All in all… please do NOT send your child here. It is a terrible school, and I would never recommend this place to anyone.
