Our 12 year old son attended Rio Grande School from age 3 until he graduated from 6th grade. Our 8 year old son also entered into RGS as a 3 year old, and continues to thrive as a third grader. With both of our children, we have been so impressed by the top-notch learning environment the school provides, including rigorous academic classes complemented by performing arts, music, Spanish, science, and adventure-based learning opportunities. We love the buddies program, which links younger students with older student mentors, creating a really sweet social cross-pollination throughout the school. We are impressed by the project-based-learning the school emphasizes, utilizing technology and other tools to plan, prepare, present, and critique. By 6th grade, RGS students feel comfortable writing and presenting publicly, and have multiple opportunities throughout the year to do so. We are most grateful that RGS exists, and can’t say enough in praise of this learning institution, its head of school, Nigel Taplin, the brilliant educators who give such energy and expertise to the school, and all the families who get involved and engage with their students in the rich learning that Rio Grande School provides. Bravo, and Thank You!
My child attended this school in the 5th and 6th grade. She joined a class of 18 taught by 4 excellent teachers who improved her confidence, helped her to develop her academic skills and navigate the complex social relationships of 11 and 12 year old girls. I can not say enough about how pleased our family has been with the education our daughter received. The school recently took the 6th grade class on a campout during one of the last weeks of school and the class climbed the 11,300 foot Mt. Taylor. As we watched the slide show of the campout at her graduation ceremony the fullness of her education showed through. The school and its teachers work to develop the whole person, not only their academic skills. Recently, my father passed, and my daughter’s English teacher listened with compassion and expressed empathy and then encouraged my daughter to write an elegy of her grandfather. My daughter wrote a beautiful poem about her relationship with her grandfather. The teacher showed an incredible sensitivity and commitment to teaching students even under sad and unfortunate circumstances.
RGS has been a great environment for our kids. The teachers take the time to teach to the student rather than some mass expectation and when there are challenges the teachers and the administration are there to help. The community has been welcoming and the new leadership at RGS pushing the school to be even better. Our kids love the school.
