I graduated from RRCA in 2015, I attended for my freshmen, sophomore, and last half of senior year in high school. I’ve been reflecting quite a bit on what my high school experience was, and I must say that RRCA definitely prepared me for college in ways I never would have been had I gone to a “traditional” high school for all four years. I am a student at UNM, a Presidential Scholar, an officer of UNM’s Honors Student Association, on the Dean’s List, a recent second place winner of the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Conference, and am in the process for applying for amazing opportunities such as the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (a research fellowship), and the Honors Interdisciplinary Liberal Arts Major (as an addition to my Sociology Major). I just got onto staff for Scribendi next year, a nationally acclaimed Honors College Literature and Arts magazine. I went to Santa Fe last February and spoke to the senate on eating disorders awareness and found that I have quite the affinity for public speaking. I’m also working on kick starting a new ministry targeted towards creative Christians, and I volunteer at my church and around the community all the time. Why do I list these things out? Because RRCA taught me the self-discipline necessary to be a college student. Through the Supercomputing Challenge (which I did my freshman/sophomore years), I learned valuable skills to prepare me for independent research as an undergrad (a rare opportunity!). RRCA also gave me the freedom and agency to spend time working on my passions–it was while being a student there that I had the time throughout the day to teach myself guitar, engage more in poetry, writing, art, crocheting, etc. RRCA also prepared me for the unique structure of the UNM Honors College and I credit much of my networking and small group discussion skills to my time at the school. Beyond the academics, RRCA provided an educational experience without the extensive social drama and bullying I faced at “traditional” schools.
I think there was a bit of a stretch of time where I was annoyed with the system, but as I’ve gotten older, I see that we can always find something we don’t like in the moment (especially as moody teenagers), and there were wonderful things about the school, staff, and teachers that I wouldn’t trade for the world. Overall, I am proud to be an RRCA graduate and am grateful for all of the opportunities I had as a student there.
Granted, the program likely has changed a little since I graduated four years ago, but if you are considering attending this school, I highly recommend giving it a shot. If you’re worried about missing out on the high school experience, I’d like to point out how you can still engage in that! I was in theatre, NHS, and other programs while at RRCA. I was able to take AP classes at RRHS. I attended the big high school dances.
The skills I learned at RRCA truly helped form me into the successful student I am today!
My son went to this school for half of last year. My son has never gone to a school like this so of course there was an adjustment period. Because of some misunderstandings he fell behind. Long story short they decided he didn’t fit well with them. We didn’t receive any notification that they were not going to let him come back this year. I called several times throughout the summer to see how to register him again. I never received a call back, a letter or any kind of notification until I went in person to talk to them. It would have been nice to know so that I wasn’t trying to figure out where my kid was going to go to school the day school started!! They were extremely rude and not very understanding at all!! I could not believe how we were treated by the staff. Last year the teachers we extremely rude as well. Not understanding at all. As it was described to me his school was made for kids who struggle with anxiety and other issues like this. You would think that they would be kinder and more caring if this is the kind of kids they deal with.
