My six children are all great student leaders, athletes and actively involved in community service. They are well known and well respected. Four of the six attended Sterling; two of them were withdrawn as a result of conflict with the administration (the other two thrived under the leadership of Ms. Leifer.) The current school principal does not adhere to stated values and attempts to squelch parental involvement when it does not co-sign his agenda. Prior to the arrival of the current administrator, Sterling had great teachers; many of them have since transferred or quit. I was advised by some of those same teachers to transfer my children, as Garza did not care about the students and the kids would not flourish in such a hostile environment. I did not transfer my children at that time and truly regret having disregarded their counsel. No school is perfect. The success of our children requires everyone involved (parents, teachers, administration, community, etc.) to partner as we teach, train, equip and empower our children to fulfill their purpose. This school is an example of everything a school should not be – I would not send any child to Sterling Middle School without it first undergoing an extreme makeover, beginning with the removal of their current school principal. He hires teachers while the school is in dire need of educators (people who have a heart for children and go beyond the surface to unlock the potential within that child.) Sterling is for mindless robots and absent parents. Please do not send your child to this school.
As an educator, I have worked in close to 15 schools in eight school districts across three states. I can honestly say that the current administration and staff at RSMS is the most caring and fostering group of people with an eye toward developing academic, social and emotional growth and development for all students. The curriculum is rigorous, holding with IB standards, and delivered on a level that the students can understand and build upon for successful completion of each grade level and in preparation for high school.
