I graduated from this school and this school district back in 2014. I grew up going to Ingels Elementary and Smith-Hale Middle (the original building). I was there when the district consolidated back in 2010. I was with that group. Did I complain? I did. Was I prepared for college? Maybe. Did RHS prepare me for the real world? That’s debatable. But! Did I make it to college? I did. Am I pursuing a degree? Yes. Just goes to show that it doesn’t matter what school you go to. Success is always with you if you’re willing to go after it.

Now, don’t take me for a fool: lunch was still miserable, the building water fountains were a scare and, heating and cooling is not a 70 year old building’s strongest point… Nonetheless, I still enjoyed my time here at RHS. I enjoyed my time with a large majority of the teachers that were there (and still are there) and, I hope the future classes will enjoy this school as much as I did.

I graduated from Ruskin High School in 1944, Prof Burke was Principal when I was a Freshman, Marvin Langford was Principal when I graduated. The student body reached a total of 100 students my final year. I went on to earn Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral degrees. A little square brick box in the middle of a cornfield. Great memories, some not so great, but I doubt I would have pursued further education had it not been for the encouragement of Marvin Langford and the families of some of my student friends. Ordinary little schools in ordinary places can produce extraordinary graduates if the kids are willing to take it seriously.
