I was a bit of a disruptive student in elementary school, especially during boring math lessons. When I was in 3rd grade, a family friend recommended I try RSM. Extra school may have seemed like a counterintuitive solution, but I absolutely loved it. RSM dared to show me more complex ideas than my public school ever would, and I was actually having fun doing it. Our teacher would pose puzzling problems, and would subtly guide the class to discover the solutions for ourselves in such a way that we all felt like absolute geniuses. RSM became part of my weekly schedule for the next 8 years, and it has played a major role in shaping me into the adult I am today.
Instead of drilling calculations and memorizing formulas, RSM teaches students creative problem-solving, and genuine comprehension. When students ask “When will I ever use this in real life?” about something like the quadratic formula, it’s a valid question. At RSM, math is not about simply computing the correct answer on a test. It’s about building the confidence to tackle never-before-seen problems. That, unlike solving for x, is a challenge every adult faces sooner or later, and it’s a challenge that RSM has taught me not to shy away from.
I’ve been a student since second grade — RSM has inspired and nurtured my love for math, teaching, and learning. My teachers have just been the most wonderful and I really look up to them. Through RSM I’ve scored 790 in the math section of the SAT in eight grade and been giving amazing opportunities like a math competition team and even being employed as a tutor for RSM! I am so grateful to RSM and the staff there for the incredible years I’ve had as a student. RSM is much more than getting ahead of public school math — it’s about developing a love of learning, honing critical thinking and problem solving skills, and enjoying a community of math that supports academic achievement. Being at RSM has not only shaped who I am but also prepared me for a promising future, whether that is in high school or beyond!
As a long-time student and now a tutor, I can with great confidence recommend RSM. RSM provides pathways to success for every student. Many people look to get ahead of school and find their place in the high-level classes, with practically no ceiling for growth because of the policy of skipping grades. Other students look to find a deeper understand than school can provide to boost their grades and get a stronger foundation in mathematics. I truly believe that RSM is not only a place for award-winning students, but a place for anyone with any sort of goal in math.
