It’s been so fun and cool learning Japanese at the San Jose Learning Center! They offer a good amount of options in terms of class style preference (online, in-person, hybrid), as well as time slots.

I took an online class with Kiyono-sensei for Japanese Level 3 recently. She was really nice and willing to hear and answer any questions. I enjoyed her quizzes, and she gives productive feedback on weekly homework. I also liked how she provided a lesson plan in the beginning of the class that laid out the lessons for each week as well as the homework, if you ever wanted to read/work ahead, or you missed a week. In terms of her in-class experience, I wish she would have provided maybe a few more examples of conjugation before diving into exercises, but all in all, she was really good at coordinating pair work virtually and you eventually get the hang of it if you pay attention, review the material and do the homework/quizzes.

I’ve had 2 different teachers for this language so far (Kiyono and Ami), and they both have been great. I notice that each teacher has their own style of teaching, so if you don’t vibe with one teacher’s methods, I’m sure there would be another teacher that would better suit your learning needs.

I’m currently taking Tagalog 1 with Donnalyn, and the class is really great! Her teaching is clear, the lesson slides and material are sent before the weekly class, and the pace is steady without being too challenging. I’ve been wanting to learn Tagalog for a while, and having SJLC as a resource for online language classes is just perfect for me. The times are convenient with a 9-5 schedule, and the Zoom lecture is recorded on the chance I do have to miss. I would highly recommend SJLC to anyone wishing to learn a language 🙂
