My husband and I think SHSU Charter School is a wonderful option for our family because they are merging a private school concept and a public school concept into one.

What makes them different is that SHSU Charter is a tuition free school that is NOT benchmark and STAAR driven. They are getting back to the needs of the whole child by offering smaller class sizes and a more personal environment with hands on curriculum enhanced by SHSU College of Education professors.

They have a year round program with intercessions following each six week grading period which is nice for families who like to travel during the off seasons. (There will actually only be 170 instructional days for students during the 2017-2018 school year which we have noticed is less than other schools in the surrounding districts.) SHSU Charter School is also offering a robotics enrichment program and will be something new and interesting for our children to experience.

We feel that our children will be less likely to “fall through the cracks” and will be more likely to succeed in a smaller learning environment where it will be easier to really connect with other students and staff and develop a strong feeling of belonging to something great.

Teachers are certified with years of teaching experience and administrators are seasoned educators in both classroom and administrative settings.

The faculty are all very warm and welcoming. The teachers have all known or worked for the principal for years and have followed her to the new school. That makes me, as a parent, feel confident about the teachers’ level of commitment and honestly, I think it speaks volumes about Mrs. O’Neal’s character that her staff thinks so highly of her to want to do so.

We are excited about what SHSU Charter is offering and see this as an opportunity to receive the advantages of a private school without the high price tag that comes with it.

In all honesty, this school is a very good school to enroll your child into. The curriculum that is being taught is on point and interesting, with the teachers giving examples and letting the students be interactive with the agenda. If a student is observed being highly exceptional with his behavior and his grades, he/she has the chance to be recruited into the GT program(gifted and talented program). The GT program gives students a chance to expand their knowledge in class while at the same time, having fun. Another recommendation I would make is to sign up for the Robotics team since, it gives the students a lot of background knowledge about coding and builds teamwork and trust. It also allows the students to be innovative and creative with the design of the robot and the functions that it will allow for the robot to perform. Aside from the academics, the whole community is very wholesome and kind, and the teachers and parents, show a great example of the community at SHSU Charter School at Brighton Academy. As a former student who went to this school, I would say that it is definitely worth the experience to come and learn here.
I am so impressed with the administration and faculty of SHSU Charter School. We have attended charter schools in the past and the opportunities they are offering at SHSU to our students is FAR beyond anything we have had at other schools.
Just to name a few….
~ Robotics curriculum for 3rd and 4th grade students AND Lego competitions
~ Highly qualified teachers with 10+ years experience
~ NO BENCHMARK TESTING
~ Dedicated enrichment weeks to Fully immerse the students in the concepts they learned in the previous grading period with hands on activities and trips
~Skype buddies with other SHSU Virtual School students around the world including Beijing, Moscow, & Costa Rica
