During the pandemic SHUFSD administrators were not only honest with the community, but they were also responsive to our concerns and hopes. I have two children, one in Birchwood and another at Silas Wood, and I cannot think of better places to be at.
Teachers in this district seem to be happy to be part of this community, which is very important and telling of the type of support they get from their administration and our community. Motivated teachers = engaged students, and that is key for academic success. I am an educator myself and I sense that this school district tries to be responsive to each child’s needs.
My kids came into the district with very low skills and teachers were quick to catch onto their needs and help them achieve grade level academic skills.
The district has great events and programs for everyone.
The public library is great! It’s a beautiful building and the book selections are rich. They have great programs for the community as well.
Transportation dept, needs some customer service improvement, but this is a big district and I understand there is some issues with getting enough drivers and trying to listen to everyone’s request. Despite that, they had continued to service the community without interruption, so I am grateful for that.

South Huntington Union Free School District is not a good district to raise your family. My son has been bullied for more than one year, I complained to the school, filed all DASA incidents reports but the school, DASA coordinator and super attender do not take it seriously. Be aware that if you email to Board of Education of SHSD and you complain about outgoing bully and ask them to do something about it, they won’t even respond and never return the calls. Which options are left for parents if the school, the district and BOE don’t respond to bullying complains? You will pay high taxes for SHSD but in return they don’t want to support your family when it comes about dealing with bullying and you can end up being discriminated. Not a good district to raise your families.
