Spectrum Academy aims to help children of any disability or short coming to realize their potential through tiered educational programs designed to accommodate varying needs. This admirable pursuit is what drew me to working there several months ago. However, after working with some of Spectrum’s staff, it is clear to me that this isn’t a perfect system, but it is just like any other public organization. The kids were amazing, but the staff and admin have a very clear idea in their minds of what you should be doing, but don’t always give you that information; even when you press for it. Some of the teachers are about as qualified as any other school, and the culture among some of the employees resembles a high school clique rather than a united team looking to improve the education system for disabled youth. Overall, I think it is a decent school that does have many good teachers and professionals that are wonderful for children, but a hard place to work if you aren’t placed with “the right coworkers” who care about your success.
My wife and I were looking forward to sending our son to Spectrum Academy but due to his anxiety and the fact that he hates making changes to even the most simple of tasks, we were wanting to let him take a tour to help him make the decision. After my wife let me know that the Academy would not allow him to take a tour due to COVID, I was so angry. I couldn’t believe that a school that has been established to assist and educate children with Autism would be so hypocritical and not allow a simple tour. I understand that COVID has changed things but I couldn’t believe that a school would be so dismissive of such a simple need.
Unfortunately, there are not enough qualified teachers at this school and there needs to be more class options.
Also, I dont feel that the academic standards are very high here compared to public schools. It wont prepare your child for college or the real world. Also, there are some issues with some of the behaviors here of the students and the students will never get expelled.
