I am very disappointed of this school
my daughter attended to St benedict school for 5 years , we were super happy because she is an excellent student , very charismatic person and humble , but last year 2021 my seven year old started second grade , teacher name Mr Dowling , my son constantly stated Mr Dowling scream at the class in a disrespectful way that makes him feel very scared , I spoke to my son about the difference in yelling , and to try to be respectful and behave , it wasn’t that bad to my point of view , but then my son started peeing in the bed for 3 days in a row , didn’t want to go to school and when we were outside the school he started crying to much not wanting to go to class , my Son never told me several things I started finding out by Myself through other parents and his classmates stated Mr Dowling screams a lot in the hall ways , in the class, and that my son was taking out from class 3 times and one of those times he was sent to a kindergarten class , the reason ? Mr Dowling never let us know this happen , instead he stay quite and started taking punishments to my son by his own , which to me this isnt okay at all , when we went to Ms Gemo(the principal) and raise our concerns she said to give her 2 days to check what was going on and she did nothing , I ask her we want our son to be move to another class she said no, she never gave my husband and I the chance to speak infront of the teacher our concerns and instead cover him to keep his job position without caring how my son was feeling about him, we had to transfer both of my kids in the middle of the year , January 18, 2022 because this was affecting everyone’s mental health , including my kids , the teacher quit his position right away when we complain about his behavior with his students , the same day he was and not to live school , instead we had to live the school? Is that even right? My son isn’t the only one complain about the teacher , there is another student in the class who also pees in the bed , who also is scared to go to school , who states he is scared of Mr Dowling , is it okay to be attending school scared ? In a blue ribbon school? I am very hurt as a mother, my kids deserve to be happy at school , to be heard, I am very disappointed.
We have been a part of the wonderful St Benedict Prep school community for five years. Our kids have had teachers who focus on teaching the whole child. They take great care with the academic material but also with teaching emotional intelligence. They are focused on skills kids will need in the future, not just on memorizing and regurgitating content. The kids collaborate in all different ways. They are challenged to find creative solutions. The team teaching that goes on at each grade level is so efficient and awesome for the kids and the parents. There is a real spirit amongst the parents of wanting to be a force for positive change and constant improvement which is shared by the administration and teaching staff.

The school provides lots of resources and support for those with various learning and behavioral issues which we have so appreciated. The interaction of the inclusion facilitator, class room teachers and our child’s doctor, as well as the support for us as we have gone through the process of having a child evaluated and diagnosed, has been unbelievable.

We are in our 3rd year as a St. Benedict family and we couldn’t be happier. Our 2nd grader absolutely LOVES going to school. She recently started in student council, in SECOND GRADE! The extracurriculars, from Running Club to Dance and Violin, there is something for every child, no matter the interest. They’re making great strides in technology as well with their recent 1:1 device rollout, STEM curriculum, new cyber security as well as new safety measures puts them on the cutting edge.

The culture is fantastic as well. We quickly made lifelong friends and we can all count on each other – it takes a village.

St Bens is a fantastic school and they continue to make great strides toward becoming one of the leading private schools on the northside.
