Sitting there in the classroom, one can’t help but feel that there is a prevalent air of lassitude; Students find the best ways to slack off and teacher inaction let’s laziness run its course. Apathy begets apathy, and nobody grows.
Their technology policies are draconian yet their care for student well-being is oddly off-handed and dismissive. And their heavy restrictions, blacklists and surveillance just leads to, ironically, students finding more creative ways to bypass them.
The students themselves are another can of worms altogether. I don’t want to vilify all of them, but… they’re not exactly exemplars of model behaviour. Or even basic human kindness, which is concerning.
Some teachers are actually really nice, helpful, even cool. Yet alas, sadly, that’s all it is: just some.
I dunno, guess I’m just disillusioned. But justifiably so.
however, the learning environments aren’t great because the students are so disengaged. most go on their phones discreetly during class instead of doing work, which I’m sure is partly because the laptops are so restricted.
there is a presence of vape, the school said they’d be using smoke detectors but i see students vaping in the bathrooms and nothing happening.
the grading system is rigged because the only way to get an above standard is with generous teachers or by specfically asking for extensions, good grades alone don’t cut it.
a lot of the teachers are new or too old and teach badly, never give feedback or grades in a timely manner & come to class 10 minutes late (shout out to the english departments). during my english sacs my class would go to the bathroon, talk loudly or go on their phones. then they would ask for extensions & just receive them. this is really bad prep for english exams, when you have to be writng essays in under an hour. they don’t teach you how to analyse texts either, but rather just give you all the analysis.
in my math advanced class the only students doing well are those who already have a good grasp of the content.
in my class there was a case of bullying and the teachers didn’t do much to tell the students off, although they were telling them to stop bothering the victim. obviously they wouldn’t.
a lot of the students wear makeup which isn’t a bad necessarily, but it may cause other female students to feel like they must put on tons of makeup too to fit in. the school is very relaxed with uniform rules in the senior campus. neither a good or a bad thing.
