I just wanted to write a brief note about how happy my family has been with our sixth grader Declan’s experience at SJWCA this year. At the beginning of the school year, we spontaneously removed Declan from MS 88 and sent him to SJWCA. We just knew that neither Declan nor our family could survive a year of Declan on remote learning. Anything would be better than public school. What we did not know is that we would fall in love with SJWCA. From Declan’s teachers to the administrators to the curriculum, Declan has had a wonderful in-person experience this year. In particular, Declan started every day with the Pledge of Allegiance, the Hail Mary, the Our Father, and a prayer to St. Joseph. Then, for the rest of the day, he had a traditional education with a student body that is more diverse than any of the public schools in the area. We fell in love with the education, and even though his older brothers went to some of the most selective public high schools in NYC, we are committed to sending Declan to Catholic school through High School. We want our son to have a traditional education in which he learns to think and is not indoctrinated in the political fad of the moment. We want him to use his brain and not follow the crowd. SJWCA is a gem, and we heartily recommend it to anyone who wants a traditional rigorous education and wants their child to learn how to think.
I removed my child after being here for 1 year. In my case the principal was new and the school was ran very poorly. Out dated curriculum, they use public school common core not what I was expecting. My child also experienced lots of bullying, to be told eventually it will stop when they fight back ? The lunch room is very small with a lunch lady who was extremely unfriendly my child didn’t even want to eat. The play area is a slab of concrete with cars parked where they play ? Children run around Aimlessly and are extremely careless of others, my child got hurt countless times and the response.. kids will be kids ? I would not recommend your child attending this 1950 style of teaching at all, save your child the negative experience my child still talks about !

**I tried to respond to the current review, the children DO NOT have ample
room to play during recess. They do not park cars on one side they park them all over an already small area on both sides anyone could drive by and see this for themselves. The field across the way is used for gym maybe once or twice a year in warmer weather. The children are careless of one another many many times being hurt. This is a catholic school which is based on telling the truth. The school dynamic needs to be ran better.

First grade through eighth grade parent here who is extremely grateful for all of the lessons, challenges, support and love this school has provided my child and his classmates over the years.
– Rigorous academics, especially science and math
– Teachers who engage scholastically and emotionally
– Administration that is focused on the health and welfare of the students and the school; solid principal, finally after a string of revolving door principals
– Fun extracurricular clubs/activities
– A really great HAA/community of parents who make fundraising events fun yet organized to alleviate effort and stress
I highly recommend SJWCA, we will miss you next year.
