My child was attending the Pre-K3 program at St. Stans. After 7 months of attendance, I made the decision to remove my son from the school. I did not have a good experience with the PK3 teacher or the Principal. Just like most parents I was intrigued by the persona of St. Stans, and the high state test scores. While students in later grades may score high, and get scholarships, I strongly feel that the school does not have teachers or teacher assistants that are educated enough or skilled to understand and handle early childhood development. This school does not understand or nurture differences in small children of preschool age. My son’s teacher had a very hypercritical way of evaluating children. In addition, she did not at all demonstrate any sort of knowledge or emotional intelligence in respects to understanding children. Her approach to children is one size fits all. Same with the principal. The principal failed, because instead of considering the lack of training of her staff and having an objective approach, she took sides with the teacher. On more than one occasion I witnessed the staff raising their voice at my son and other small children. One teacher assistant grabbed my son’s arm and dragged him down the hall in front of me. Totally inappropriate way to treat a child much less one that is only 3. The school may work for some, but it certainly didn’t work for me. I prefer for my son to be in an environment where the principal and teachers are warm and nurturing, not cold, indifferent and hypercritical. I have since found a lovely preschool for my son where the staff is highly educated and nurturing to young children.
We are a French family that originally moved 1 year 1/2 ago to Greenpoint for PS110 and its French dual program. But because PS110 only starts in PreK4 we enrolled our daughter at St Stan in PreK3 with the idea that she would only stay one year and then go to PS110 in PreK4. We (our daughter and us, the parents) love the school so much that we just enrolled her for Kindergarten ! We love the small community, the European education (there is a strong Polish influence), the attention the kids get from the teachers (the class sizes are small), the events they organized etc.. The fact we wont have to deal with middle school tests (it goes until 8th grade) is a huge plus but most importantly theirs academic results are impressive ! And on top of that their fees are very reasonable. We are even working on a after class program for French native that hopefully will be available soon!
I think St. Stans Catholic Academy is a great school. I chose this school for my daughter for several reasons. Classes are small, the schools test scores are top notch and it give us a real sense of community and belonging, which is nice in a NYC neighborhood. At first before I knew much about the school, my impressions were that it was all Polish. However I was proven to be wrong in that there is a real mixture of people in the school and it is a great friendly environment. I also have to say, I was extremely impressed with their school function organization. The International Night Show and Christmas pageant were impressive and enjoyable experiences. They involved all the schools children from PreK3 through 8th Grade. Overall it has been a great experience for my daughter and I look forward to her spending the rest of her elementary school career there.
