I literally feel like this school is anti-parent. I have had teachers tell my child things that I said in confidence when I was concerned for my child, which drove a wedge between my child and I. It was like the adult staff was “siding” with a teenager, when “sides” are not at all ideal, especially in a community-based school. As I have advocated for accommodations for my student through the 504 process, it was like the EC staff was fighting against me, even though my child was found eligible according to the process. It felt like anti-mom. I have a 15 year history in both Special Education & EL Education. This school and EL Education are supposed to be all about “Crew” but parents are Crew – incredibly important members of the Crew and team of the child. I have not felt that there is a team approach that appropriately partners with the parents. I have also heard this from at least two other families. This ideology at FSI also separates families and children where gender questioning is concerned. I feel really disappointed.
I knew my son’s first year at the Franklin School of Innovation as a 7th grader would be a challenge. However, he has matured and shown more confidence through the transition than I would have hoped. The teachers, students, and families are involved with the school’s success and it shows! It is always promising when your child’s least favorite subject is taught by their favorite teacher. My son also enjoys a few of the many clubs and extracurricular activities offered including, Chess Club, co-ed Flag Football, and Basketball. We are so happy to have found this school and community dedicated to my son and his fellow students.
Franklin School of Innovation encourages my student by placing great value on ALL her ideas! She asked her math teacher if she could be the teacher for just a day. Next day, she did the lesson plan. My daughter loves knowing her school is going to say yes to her every chance they can! It is heightening her overall confidence and very positive view of learning! My younger son is hanging out the window at every carpool line, just eager for it to finally be his turn to try FSI!
