For the past couple of months, I have had the pleasure to work with both the staff and students at GHSA. I am honored to be a part of such a nourishing and culturally diverse community. The curricular is outstanding. It is designed to meet students where they are while strategically scaffolding towards grade level or above. In addition, students are participating in a open forum discussion once a week where they address issues that teen’s struggle with today eg. Self esteem, bullying, career readiness, attributes of good character, and much more). Students are able to use self regulating strategies that are being taught through Positive behavior Support Interventions. Ms. Margo and Mrs. Anderson are very supportive to their student’s, parent’s, and staff. They provide positive feedback and constructive criticism when necessary. What touched me the most this year – is when they provided Thanksgiving dinners to college individuals who wasn’t able to be with their own families on Thanksgiving DAY! Not too often in the public school’s are our children taught to extend themselves to others and make sacrifices… yet I have witnessed it being done at GHSA. This school is a model school that exemplifies all the attributes of a community of individuals that TRULY CARE for their students!
As you can see there are different opinions of Grace Hopper. Every experience is different. Academically, this is a 4 star school. They challenge their students which would be a good reason to send your child. The teachers and the Principal, Ms. Anderson are great. However, I took my child out because the Executive Director told my child she needed special ed services because she couldn’t explain to her why she talks so much in class. QUOTE: “There must be something wrong with you”. She actually repeated those words to me directly too. Her teachers and the Principal confirmed that my child has never been disrespectful to them. so I’m not sure why she felt it was appropriate to say to a child. We expect the adults in our children’s life to uplift and encourage. Just make sure you talk to other parents and students before you make your decision.
