My son joined the school last September.
He is happy at John Roan and made a lot new, good behaving friends. Communication with teachers, and school in general is easy. I recommend this school.
Thank you.
The John Roan School is a mixed comprehensive that really tries to live up to the United Learning motto of “the best in everyone”. It has been rated Good by Ofsted, and the inspection found a lot of things to praise at the school.

Academic results are impressive and improving year on year, both at GCSE and sixth form, where many students go on to top universities.

The Principal and school leadership are inspiring, and the teaching is of a generally high standard. Behaviour is good, everyone seems to fit in. There is a range of extra curricula and after-school activities.

If you’re reading Google Reviews because you are choosing a secondary school, I’d offer the following advice, speaking as a parent with two sons at the school. First, don’t be influenced by anyone who isn’t part of the school. Far better to go and see for yourself at one of the regular open days.

Second, if you don’t put the school as one of your top choices at Y7, you probably won’t get a place. The John Roan is becoming very popular locally as word gets out about the trajectory it’s on.

My son is in Year 8. He’s happy and settled here, and doing well with his studies. The school is very welcoming – they really go out of the way to make kids feel at home when they start in Year 7- and the communication with the staff is really good. I know there were some issues at the school a few years back, but I’ve not seen any signs of any major issues whilst my son has been there. People I know with older kids say that a lot has been done to deal with the issues and the school has moved on massively and improved since then. So far, my son and I are happy with the school.
My son has just finished 7 years at The John Roan School and has just started his University adventure at Imperial College, London to study physics. Throughout his time, all the teachers and support staff have supported him in his education, recognising his ability and mentoring him along the way. I cannot recommend the 6th form enough. My other son is yr 11 and he is being fully supported to work hard and achieve his best. The teachers are always responsive and looking out for the students.
It’s a great community school!
We have had a really positive experience with John Roan, my daughter has been there since Y7 and the school has gone from strength to strength. The teaching staff are now very committed and the quality of teaching has really improved. My daughter has also had lots of opportunities such as learning musical instruments, singing lessons, debate mate, DofE, varied sporting activities as well as school plays etc. Would recommend any parent to check it out.
