Well, I am 48yrs old, 321lbs (very overweight) and in very poor physical condition. I have wanted to learn a martial arts form since I was 15yrs old, but never did. Call it mid life crisis or what ever, but I decided to try Tae Kwon Do. I went for an introductory visit last week Monday (8-30-2013). I was immediately welcomed by not only the staff but the members as well. The age ranges of the members varies from wee little ones to adults older than myself. I was made to feel like family by everyone especially the younger high school and college age members, which impressed me by the level of hospitality and respect they showed me, proving to me they have been taught MUCH more than how to kick and punch, they have been taught a lot about life and moral values.
Well, I went to my first class last night, (Thursday 10-10-2013) and it was rough since I am SOOOOOOO out of shape, I could not keep up at all with the cardio warm ups and had to slow down to my own pace…instead of being chastised, I was showered with congratulations for doing my best and making it through the whole class. I was reassured by several of the members and the instructors that no one would ever look down on me for doing as much as I could and to stick with it and keep doing my best.
I have found a new family at the US Taekwondo Academy and all I have to say to the reviewer that ONLY went to the initial visit, stating he was not impressed, is that you have missed out on one of the best opportunities of a lifetime.
I remember this school like it was yesterday, I grew up with Grand Master Kim as the instructor along with his Children John Kim, Mijune, it was practically my second home and family.
I was always there, and was with a lot of friends, like Billy Greathouse, Matt, Mike Grover, Todd, Chad, Mr. Parks, Sam, and the gang. I have been searching on an on for ways to reconnect with them. I’m grateful for having found this page. If Master Kim or anyone else is reading this right now, I’d like to say from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU for changing my life, for changing the way I look at things. Without the precious lessons learned and lived there I would still be the kid who got bullied and never learned to move on.

My nickname was Monkey boy back in the day, wonderful memories to keep for the rest of my life.
