I worked professionally in the design industry in Oklahoma from 2014 to 2019 as a Motion Graphics Specialist.
In 2019 I switched to IT and started a new career as a self taught software Developer and am now making two and a half times the salary I made as a graphic designer at one of the largest companies in America.
As much as I love making fun and interesting graphics, working professionally as a graphic designer was a horrible experience.
The pay is horrible. The market is oversaturated. A lot of local designers in the industry are extremely toxic and competitive towards eachother. It seems like a lot of designers hate eachother. I’ve never seen this in the IT industry but it seems to he the norm in the design industry at least in Oklahoma.
They don’t warn you about this in design school. It’s not in the professors best interest to warn you that this career sucks. They need to keep classes full to make money.
As a motion graphics specialist I worked 40 hours/week in an extremely toxic office for a paycheck that could barely afford me a house back in 2018. With inflation and the state of the economy now in 2024 there is no way you would be able to purchase a decent home on a graphic design salary.
The simple fact of the matter is a decent software developer will earn 100k in Oklahoma bit a decent graphic designer will earn half that.
Graphic Design is a fun skill to have but it is a nightmare to pursue as a career in my honest experience. Switching over to the IT industry was one of the best decisions I ever made.
Graphic design was once a respected profession with a great job market prior to the 2000’s but it seems to have been cheapened in the past couple of decades. Decent designers are a dime a dozen so it can be tough to stand out in an oversaturated market.
The same cannot be said of the IT industry. A decent Software Developer can command 2-3x the salary of a decent designer and will have less difficulty finding a position.
In 2020 I was laid off from my first software Developer job due to the COVID pandemic. A colleague offered me a graphic design position at their company but I said no thanks. I will never go back to graphic design.
TlDR; Graphic design is a great skill to have but it’s not a great profession.
