I was looking around for a good place to start taking Spanish classes downtown and read great things about this place. Those reviews were right! They take the time to place you in a Spanish class based on the skills you come in with. While I hadn’t learned Spanish since I was in 6th grade, I had taken German all the way through a degree minor in college, so they took my skills learning language into account in my placement discussion. I was initially going to enroll in the introductory class on my own, but was encouraged to come in and try the Basic 1 and Basic 2 classes to see which fit me better. It turned out I felt more comfortable with the speed of the Basic 2 class. The content fits well together and flows from one unit to another. The focus is well split between grammar concepts and vocabulary growth, so you really feel like you’re advancing in your ability to communicate, and to do it accurately. The immersive nature is one of the things I was looking for, and the instructor held us accountable for speaking our thoughts in Spanish as best we could whenever possible. Despite all these serious sounding postives about the educational aspects, I also found the class to be a lot of fun! The activities are varied, so it’s always interesting and you bond with your classmates while you practice together and do exercises. After Basic 2, we all decided to enroll in Basic 3 together so we are all learning the next level again as a group, with a new person added which is great for the class too! I will definitely be continuing to get my education here, in preparation for supporting my husband in raising our children to be bilingual in Spanish. With the help of UNAM, I will be an active part of my bilingual household!
