After half the year is gone, as a student as Vel Phillips, I can tell you that the school has shown to be a lot better than people are making it seem. A lot of people are portraying this school as if there’s a fight almost every single day, which is not true. The fights that do happen end up getting broken up really quickly by the staff. This school is also really big, which people are saying is a bad thing, but its actually very easy to get to class on time, and if your child is getting tons of tardy’s, then they’re not trying to get to class. The 2nd semester also brought a schedule change to almost every student. Along with switching our semester classes, (like gym) they also moved around the main classes (literacy, science, etc). This made most classes the same size, and also less chaotic, so more work will actually be getting done in those classes. Overall, Vel Phillips is a lot better of a school than people are making it seem, so don’t trust every reviewer on here.

I am incredibly disappointed in this school. I have been so patient hoping that they would figure it out, but we are coming to the new semester and my son is miserable. There are some terribly disrespectful students and no one seems to know how to be an adult… And the teachers seem to be unqualified and obviously overwhelmed if they let the students talk to each other, and the staff the way they do. One teacher started out the semester trying to see how much they could embarrase the kids with inappropriate remarks that should never leave a teachers mouth. Many teachers have just walked and I am afraid those were probably the good ones. As a start, parents need to start attending the school board meetings if we want to see things change.

This school is a whole train wreck. There were already 5 fights, kids were going to jail, a kid got TAZED ??, and kids are threatening the school, students, or teachers. The teachers are quiting because it’s too much and when a kid acts out of hand they are just told to wait outside the classroom. No action is ever taken for kids who just act like they’re practically ON DRUGS! All the screaming, yelling, and fighting is never dealt with AT ALL. Plus teachers are being called slurs now. I know there are a lot of kids but you can’t expect the school to do well when you’re literally taking 0 action.
