My daughter enrolled in the Cosmetology program. She has been home schooled her whole life. After six weeks in the program she discovered that she wouldn’t be receiving any state hours because she isn’t 17 years old. She found this out through another home schooled student that had the same issue last year. That poor girl didn’t find out until she had wasted an entire year in the program. We spent several hundred on a dress code appropriate wardrobe. My daughter had perfect attendance and never received below a 96% on her work. I contacted the office to see what could be done, I was told that they would make a call to the state and see if they could clear it up. After a week and a half and 3 visits on my part with no progress I pulled her out. The only solution offered was to have my daughter take the GED but even then I couldn’t get a guarantee that she would have her hours count. My biggest complaints with this problem is at enrollment I was told my daughter was old enough and one of the office workers was rather condescending. She didn’t take me seriously and blew me off each time I went in to try to resolve this issue. On the last day I was speaking to another employee that joined her and DeAnna kept rolling her eyes at me. It was very unprofessional. I feel like zero would have been done to clear this up. I do have the highest regard for the head teacher of the program, Therese. She went out of her way to help us once we brought it to her attention. This school needs more people like her. Don’t enroll your child in this program unless they are 17+.
My daughter was so excited to partake in the Culinary Arts program this year, her senior year in high school. It seemed to start out well and then things started to go downhill fast. The reason for this, the instructor. Apparently my daughter was not the only one who had issue with the instructor . Teaching was not happening and my daughter ended up hating to go. This is unfortunate as she really wanted to learn. Hopefully this place will realize how poor the instruction is and will make strides to fix it for future students.
This school gave me the opportunity to study what interested me and I was able to get credits I didn’t earn at the conventional school such as mathematics and physical education. Sadly, the program I attended, natural resources technology, is no longer available but there are many quality programs offered for students around the state at WST.
