I can’t say enough great things about this school! My son is in kindergarten & he started out at Miller elementary. Which, don’t get me wrong is a very nice school, but just wasn’t right for my son. He didn’t fit in their “box” of how a kindergartner should behave. And rather than encourage his interests & find ways to help him he was spending more & more time at the principals office. His first written story was that he was at the time out table when the fire alarm went off. That broke my heart. This school came highly recommended by my son’s preschool teacher, a couple other moms that know my son & the counselor I took him to see (bc the staff at Miller wanted to screen him for ADHD). 180 degree change in my boy! He’s so much happier!! He used to be so mad when I’d pick him up he’d scream & just be unhinged from a day of being in time out & in trouble & not being able to express himself in any way. Now, we have conversations. He tells me about his days at school. He’s excited to go instead of crying & saying he hates school when I drop him off. They have the key to unlocking him & they keep him busy. He gots to help miss Anne in the office, he even gets to answer the phone sometimes, he helps in the cafeteria ay lunch time, he gets up help the janitor clean up. All he wanted to do was help grown ups & they let him here. They let him be himself. And he loves it.
I LOVE West Side Village. They have a very interactive learning program, and AMAZING teachers. We grow food from our community garden, and 4th-8th graders get to go to the Oregon coast every year. Middle schoolers get to help kindergarteners and 1st graders learn to read and write. We get to have special events that the kids get to put on. We have a really great Principal. It is a very diverse school. We have k-1st graders in one classroom, 2nd-5th graders in 2 classrooms , and 6th-8th graders in 1 classroom. This is my 3rd year at WVMS. I am in 6th grade, and I have made a lot of friends. My brother went to the school K-8th grade and graduated high school with an Honors degree. He is now in the Honors college at University of Oregon. We learn about real world problems, and one day, every single kid that goes to this school will know how to make a difference in the world.
I attended this school from 1st grade to 8th, and enjoyed the whole ride. After experiencing High School, I can say with great confidence that this is by far the best school I can come across. Amazing teachers that make you feel like you really know them, fun, creative projects and assignments that make learning enjoyable, and an advanced curriculum that more than prepared me for later schooling, at a greater extent than my current classmates. Highly recommended.
Oh, keep in mind that exactly all of the negative reviews are from students that, in my experience, I can say are in no place to judge the effectiveness of the school.
